Direct Support Professional

Essential Duties

  • Provide long-term, direct care services to assist adults with developmental and physical disabilities in community settings.
  • Offer personal and medical assistance, including administering medications following LMA Homes procedures.
  • Teach and support Individuals Served with:
  • Personal hygiene (toileting, bathing, brushing teeth, etc.)
  • Personal assistance (dressing, eating, communicating, mobility)
  • Housekeeping (laundry, cleaning)
  • Meal assistance (planning, shopping, preparation, clean-up)
  • Personal finance management (handling cash, record-keeping)
  • Social and leisure activities
  • Vocational and employment goals
  • Role model appropriate behaviors and daily living skills.
  • Support the development of meaningful relationships and friendships.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship with Individuals Served to help them achieve their goals.
  • Implement health and safety protocols, including CPR, First Aid, and behavior management.
  • Assist with adaptive equipment and prescribed therapy programs, including lifting and transferring as needed.
  • Maintain the general upkeep of the home, workplace, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Complete documentation as required.
  • Provide input and implement individual program plans.
  • Inform supervisor of any issues regarding Individuals Served.
  • Advocate for the rights of Individuals Served to lead self-determined lives.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in work schedules as necessary.
  • Transport Individuals Served if categorized as an LMA Homes "driver."
  • Promote a positive image of LMA Homes.
  • Comply with laws regarding reporting suspected abuse and neglect.
  • Embrace and support LMA Homes philosophies related to diversity and anti-racism.
  • Perform duties in accordance with program goals, agency policies, and applicable laws.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all restricted information, data, and reports.

Training

Paid training is provided to all new hires. During your first weeks of employment, you will attend:

  • In-person classes
  • Virtual classes (Zoom)
  • Self-paced online courses
  • On-site orientations

Trainings include:

  • CPR/First Aid
  • Nutrition
  • Medication administration
  • Crisis intervention
  • Driving safety
  • Legal rights and protections of Individuals Served
    Training varies by position.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a High School diploma or GED (proof required through original diploma or official transcripts).
  • U.S. Work Authorization.
  • Clear a criminal history check before employment, per Michigan law.
  • Provide three (3) references or letters of reference before the first day.

Qualifications

  • Ability to achieve and maintain required trainings and certifications (medication, CPR/First Aid, physical intervention).
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Consistently arrive on time and as scheduled.
  • Ability to handle behavioral crises and assist with physical needs.
  • Knowledge of basic home appliances and office equipment.
  • Work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate with families and support staff.
  • Approved driver status preferred.
